Best Universities in Egypt

In Egypt today, there are 20 public universities (with about 2 million students), and 23 private universities (with 60,000 students). This is in addition to 6 other educational institutions that were included in the QS World University Rankings for the year 2019.

All public universities were included in the QS ranking of the best Arab universities, with seven of them occupying various positions among the top 50 Arab universities, which is a strong indication of the quality of education in Egypt.

Below is a list of the top 10 universities in Egypt, according to the rankings of both the QS and The World University Ranking.

1- The American University in Cairo

The American University in Cairo ranked 411th in the world and 9th in the Arab world according to the QS University Rankings for the year 2020. It is a private research university that offers its programs in English.

The university teaches American-style liberal arts and is home to the largest collection of English-language libraries in Egypt. The total number of students currently enrolled is 6,453 students from more than 50 different countries.

The American University in Cairo offers 36 bachelor’s programs, 44 master’s programs, in addition to two doctoral programs. She is a living example of excellence, diversity, continuous learning, and the values ​​of social responsibility and integrity.

2- Cairo University

Cairo University ranked between 561-570 in the QS world ranking and 11 for the same classification at the Arab level for the year 2020.

Cairo University is one of the oldest Egyptian universities. It was founded in 1908 and was called the Egyptian University. Today, its name may seem a bit misleading, especially since the university campus is located in Giza, approximately 20 km from Cairo.

The university includes 26 colleges in various scientific disciplines, and a total of about 250 thousand students are enrolled. It has adopted unconventional methods for developing academic research in an effort to meet the needs of society and research and to encourage scholars and researchers.

3- Ain Shams University

Ain Shams University is ranked between 800 – 1000 globally and 14th in the Arab world according to the QS classification for the year 2020.

The university was founded in 1950 in Cairo, becoming the third oldest university in Egypt. It is one of the large educational institutions with about 180,000 students distributed over 15 different colleges.

4- Alexandria University

Alexandria University ranked 801-1000 globally and ranked 16th in the Arab world according to the QS classification for the year 2020. The university was founded in 1938 as a branch of Cairo University, but became independent from it to become a separate educational entity in 1942 and was called “Alexandria University” in 1952.

The university expanded from 7 faculties to 22 faculties and is on its way to establish a branch in Juba, Sudan. It also currently has about 152,305 registered students.

5- Assiut University

Assiut University ranked 32 in the Arab world according to the QS classification for the year 2020. It is a non-profit public university established in 1957 in the city of Assiut and has branches in other regions in Egypt.

The university offers many bachelor ‘s ,  master’s and doctoral programs, and has implemented many research projects in the fields of groundwater, livestock and plant development, and environmental protection, in addition to more than 46 projects for the development of higher education and its strategies.

6 – Mansoura University

Although the university is not ranked globally, it is ranked 39th on the Arab level according to the QS 2020 classification.

The university was founded in 1972 in the city of Mansoura, specifically in the heart of the Nile Delta. It is one of the largest universities in Egypt, with around 100,000 students enrolled in its 17 different faculties.

Mansoura University is distinguished by its specialized medical centers, which include the largest center for the treatment of kidney diseases in Africa.

7- Al-Azhar University

Al-Azhar University ranked 44th on the Arab level according to the QS classification for the year 2020. It is the oldest university in Egypt, as it was founded in 970 in Cairo, and it is the only Arab university that has maintained its position since its establishment to this day.

The university offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs in its 81 colleges, in addition to 9 institutes and 359 academic departments. It focuses on teaching Arabic literature and Islamic sciences, in addition to a number of other disciplines such as science, technology, medicine and dentistry.

8- Suez Canal University

Suez Canal University was established in 1976 by Presidential Decree No. 93. It officially started teaching in 1977 in six major faculties:

  • College of Science.
  • faculty of Agriculture.
  • Commerce College.
  • College of Engineering and Technology (Port Said).
  • Faculty of Education (Suez).

Today, the university has more than 49,000 registered students studying in more than 20 different faculties spread over its six campuses in Ismailia, Port Said, Suez and Arish.

The university was ranked 50th according to the QS Global System for the year 2020, and has occupied a prominent position among higher education institutions in Egypt and the surrounding Arab region, through its contributions to the development of university education through the pioneering research it has undertaken.

9- The British University in Egypt

Founded in 2005, the British University in Egypt is a private, non-profit university based in Cairo. It is ranked 71st in the QS Ranking of Universities for the year 2020.
The university is keen to provide an educational experience that fits the general framework of Egyptian education law while at the same time following a high-standard British approach. This makes it one of the most promising universities in the region.

10- Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport

The Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport (AASTMT) was established in 1972 as a branch of the League of Arab States with the aim of providing education and training services in a wide range of science and technology disciplines. It carries out this mission through its headquarters in Alexandria, Cairo and Aswan, in addition to a new branch that opened in Syria in 2001.

The university was ranked 91st according to the QS rankings for the year 2020, and has about 29,700 students, including about 2,000 international students.
